Her health will determine if she can qualify for long term care insurance. Each insurer sets their own standards (and about 40% of those who apply after age 70 are declined coverage).

Rates will also vary. That is a reason we strongly recommend working with a specialist in the field who knows what health conditions each insurer accepts and can compare costs.

LH1943, I noticed in your profile that your Mom has Alzheimer's/Dementia. Sorry to say it would be very slim chances that your Mom could find a long term care insurance carrier that would cover her.

The best time to start buying long-term care insurance is when we are in our 40's and 50's, but when we were at that age such a product wasn't on our radar.

Thanks all! Very helpful information for both my mom and myself, I will keep this on my radar as those years approach.
