Find Care & Housing
In the State of AZ NOT all nursing homes (skilled nursing facilities) have to accept all patients if there's an open bed. They have to make sure a patient will not endanger other residents or themselves. For example, our local nursing homes will not accept patients with severe dementia or advanced Alzheimers because they don't have locked units to keep people safe. Additionally, depending on the severity if the mental illness, someone has to be able to follow directions to show they can benefit from the physical therapy, or medicare won't cover the cost.

As others have suggested, check with the discharge planner (often a hospital social worker) at the hospital. The hospital has to be able to have a "safe discharge" plan in order to discharge patients.

All NH's have to accept all patients if there is bed availability.

It all depends on the facility whether they accept someone based on their insurance, not their medical diagnosis. It is against the law to discriminate based on a medical/mental illness.

Yes, the Social Worker should be aware of the problem and help you find the right fscility. The rehab will have to have a lockdown unit.

Linda, discuss this with the hospital discharge planner. He or she may know which facilities may accept someone with mental illness. Or you could also start calling facilities in the area.

When you do find one, confirm it a few times to make sure that they understand the situation.

It depends on the facility an I imagine the degree of mental illness. I would imagine that it would be difficult to place a person with a mental health diagnosis that is not stabilized with medication.

This is a forum for caregiver support and not a facility. You can go the blue box that states Find Housing and Care. Input your zip code and start your search. Wishing you success.
