I am taking my mom to the Dr. next week because at 84 her memory and ability to retain information is really starting to go down hill. I want to try and postpone the inevitable for a few years if possible.

My mom has been on Aricept 5mg for awhile now and she is almost 83. I can tell you that for her it has not made a difference. Her dementia is progressing very quickly. I think everyone is different. it is suppose to slow down the process. in my moms case it hasn't but I did stop it for a month and put her back on it for different reasons.

In my opinion, either of those drugs would be worth a try, if that is what the doctor suggests. My mother (mild cognitive impairment) tried Aricept without a noticable difference, and with mild nausea side effects. She did not continue on it. My husband (Lewy Body Dementia) has been on it 9 years. Aricept is known to be more effective for some types of dementia than others. Since at this point you have no idea what type of dementia (if any) you might be dealing with, I'd day if the doctor wants her to try a drug, why not give it a shot?

Thanks for taking the time to answer...those are my sentiments exactly. But it's good to hear stories from real peoples experience because no monetary gain is involved. I'm very cautious regarding prescription meds, they are doled out so haphazardly.
