Wondering if Assisted Living rent can be claimed on our income tax next year. I am paying all of it out of pocket, no monies from anyone else. I am living off our savings, to pay bills here at home. All bills and food etc. Also can we claim the cost of the adult pants I buy, the Depends. I have been doing our taxes for several years now, no need for a long form. Hate to waste money at H&R, just to have them say 'sorry you can't claim this'. Also don't want to spend $200 on a tax expert to hear the same thing... don't have one, would have to find one.

Call the IRS and order Publication 17 or 502 for 2013 (I don't believe that the 2014 pubs will be available for several months), then read up on deductible medical expenses. Or you can find it online here:

http://www.irs.gov/publications/p502/ar02.html

You can also e-mail the IRS and ask specific questions on deductibility. Use the form here:

If you don't want to hire a tax preparer, the best thing to do is research the deductible items yourself so you can address everything you think might be deductible.
