Shocked!! I am looking at ALF options in Miami. Assuming private pay, at least until Medicaid eligible/necessary. I have one friend who pays $3000 per month one county north, . I called one place in Miami, it is a nice place, but I was shocked., they told me it is $600 per day or $18,000 per month!!!! Any thoughts on what it is the expected rate?

Find Care & Housing
The cheapest we found in the Orlando area, and this was several years ago, was about $1600/month. But that was (1) a shared room and (2) the most basic room/board package. Any needed services (like incontinence care, medication management, etc.) would add on to the monthly cost. Another place I went, where the rooms all looked like drab seedy motel rooms, started at about $3500/month. That place did not accept Medicaid at all, but the first place told me that when Medicaid was involved, it only paid for the add-on (nursing-type) services, it didn't cover any of the basic room and board. 18k strikes me as extremely steep. $3000/month seems to be the low end of average, but I think they all get quite pricey as the needed services increase. Also, the ALF can add on costs at any time as the elder declines and needs more help. So the opening cost is the lowest it will ever be. You need to consider those costs increasing over time.

lsmiami, I think the term "assisted living" is used the same as "nursing homes" depending on where one lives. I am always seeing these two terms interchanged. In my area, the two terms are very different setting.

My Mom was in a skilled nursing home which cost $12k per month, sharing a room. Mom needed around the clock intervention.

Dad was in Independent Living and later in Assisted Living/Memory Care, and the rent for said places was between $5k-$7k per month depending on what he needed. There were optional add ons.

Dad's Assisted Living/Memory Care included daily housekeeping, 3 meals in the dining room, studio apartment, laundry service, med service, and an Aide who would shower him, get him dressed and ready for the day... and night service getting him ready for bed. Dad brought along his own furniture, TV, etc.

A good one that is assisted living with memory care options in a non-major city, should be about $5k to $7k with most of what has mentioned, and this is private room, not shared. Monthly.

My mother's AL is about $5,000 a month for a private apartment (no kitchen) with housekeeping, medicine management, meals and activities. Extras costs are phone, cable, on site hairdresser. We also supply all personal toiletries, paper products, incontinence pull ups, and laundry soap. I do her personal laundry. The facility takes care of linens. Expensive but beats $12,000 a month at nearby nursing home.

Mom was in IL in Westchester County, NY a few years back. It was 5000 per month. 3 meals, once a week linen service and light housekeeping. 18k per month sounds like a very luxurious place!

My MIL on Long Island $10k per month. She has dementia but otherwise doesn't need much if any nursing care except administering meds. She is there for safety and on the floor for patients that wander and memory care.
