Find Care & Housing
Hi ! We just looked into this for my mom because we are not trained to do things like make sure she gets in and out of the shower safely and when she has bouts of diarrhea that last 2-3 days we need help. We live in southern CA and it costs about 18-20/hr for a reliable, licensed agency to send a trained aide. I think that fee might vary according to where you live. I definitely would only go with a licensed, skilled agency...we've all heard the elder abuse nightmares.
Good luck !

Wow. That sure is an expensive rate! I would agree that it depends on geographic region. Come to think of it, $20 hourly is what one of my friends in the Washington, D.C. area is paying for comparable in-home service.

I paid $18 and then $22 an hour for a licensed CNA - certified nurses aid - in Northern Idaho. The aide received minimum wage - $5.50 pr $6 and the "agency" kept the rest which disgusted me. I finally found another lady who had more sense than the aide (young, dumb and lazy) and was better to my mom. I paid HER the full $22 an hour for 5 hours a week. She did more in the 5 hours than the other aide could do in a month! This arrangement lasted about 8 months until Mom needed to move.

However, I was LUCKY to find this gal and knew her through friends. I would NOT suggest doing this with a stranger. Hiring through a home health company ensures they're at least trained and meet a minimal state requirement and they're bonded in case of theft, harm, etc...

Other rates I've seen: $25 in Portland, OR and Seattle, WA - for basic aides. If you want someone to had out medications then you'll need an LPN - ( check with your state regulations) and that will be twice the cost of a CNA. If your parent or elder is diagnosed as terminally ill then you might be able to use Hospice, they have aides and nurses that will visit regularily.
