She is 89 years old, lives with my husband and I. Generally good health, dealing with dementia/forgetfulness. She has had UTIs in the past and recently treated with antibiotics with follow up urine check, but did not see the doctor. She feels like she needs help but doesn't know what the doctor could do for her.

She sounds like my mother who's 94 and continuously says she 'doesn't feel good' or 'feels like sh*t' but cannot pinpoint why, or say exactly what's wrong. She too has dementia & lives in Memory Care Assisted Living, sees the doctor every single week and the doctor never finds anything wrong with her, per se, aside from a wart that has been removed at least 50x (and I have the bills to prove it), but it keeps growing back larger (as warts tend to do). What's 'wrong' with my mother is that she's 94 and has dementia, sits in a wheelchair all day long, eats too much ice cream and has GERD, pain in her legs from neuropathy and longs to be 60 again when she was power walking and going on cruises. Longing for The Good Old Days puts her in a foul mood every day which translates to 'not feeling good' is what I think is going on. That and her age-old complaint of feeling 'blue' which she's been saying for decades now, even with a ton of anti-depressants.

By all means get your MIL checked out by the doctor, but realize there may be no 'answer' to her malaise and general complaints of 'not feeling good', as there is no answer to my mother's complaints of the same thing. Old age is not for sissies.

Good luck!

First, with Dementia they don't realize they are old. So it just could be the normal aches and pains we all get as we age. She could be dehydrated. Is she diabetic? Has she been checked lately for diabetes? Blood pressure is the lowest in the morning. Is she getting up too fast. I read you really should sit up and dangle you feet for a little while before getting up. Get a blood pressure monitor and take her B/P as soon as she gets up and while she is sitting on the bed. Both arms.

Has she had a full workup lately? Labs will show if iron levels are low, Thyroid and other things. Does she take Cholesterol meds. These can effect the liver. If she hasn't had a Lab workup it wouldn't hurt.

Sounds like it's time to take her to the doctor for a complete physical, and a complete blood work up. If something is amiss, it should show up in her blood work. Good luck.

I’m a mere tot of 77, but recently, I’ve been beset by minor(ish) discomforts and annoyances that I had been blaming on Covid infection leftovers.

Come to find that my previously stable Thyroid functioning has been thrown out of wack by a recalled batch of thyroid replacement hormone.

I recall both my cherished aunts having flip-flop thyroid functioning as they got older, and I intend to have my current LO checked the next time her blood work comes due.

Worth considering, no matter the age. If you’re hormone is off, it just feels as though something isn’t quite right.

My Mom suffered from Graves desease where u lose weight. My Aunt gained weight. I asked if Thyroid problems run in families cause Mom and Aunt were sisters. I was told yes. So I had labs done then and will be getting them next month. Rather catch it before it gets worse.
