How can I get my mom to use her walker when she does not like to ?

I should add that mother-in-law doesn't tip over when she's using her walker, it's only when she's NOT using it.

My mother-in-law uses the old fashioned kind of walker without the seat and hand brakes. She's not mentally able to remember to use the brake, which is unfortunate. I've noticed that she's tipping over more often. It's so hard for her to get herself out of a chair now, that she'd rather just stand and wait for me in the store even though I know her back is killing her. I wonder if your mom should be using an electric scooter/chair now? Once they stop walking altogether though, I don't think they will ever start again. That part scares me a little. As for my m-i-l with her macular degeneration she couldn't see well enough to drive one of those. Plus she takes great pride in still being able to walk with her walker. If it's a pride thing with your mom, and that's the reason she 'hates' her walker, you might remind her that at least she can still walk. Good luck.

My grandmother is back home post stroke for only thirteen days and I just was able to catch her as she was spinning and stumbling to the ground. It's 1:00 in the morning and a fluke that I happen to still be up. She came into the kitchen WITHOUT her walker. I know she's fallen at least three times on carpet that I didn't see and lying about it. Yeah sure, you just decided to sit a while on the floor. She's going to hurt herself if she doesn't stop this. Yes, it's inconvenient but necessary to save her life. I would hope it doesn't take getting hurt for her to realize this. Vickie1 - two and a half years?! I knew this kind of thing happened, but I thought surely they'd understand they need to use it anyway after one or maybe two close calls. I can't see my stubborn grandmother lasting that long without injury the way she's going.
