Can my mother get Medicare and Medicaid at the same time?

my mother receives a ss ck for 978.00 after they take out 104.00 for medicare she also has tri-care for life through my late dad she is also eligible for Medicaid?

Medicare, being solely a federal program, has the same rules in all 50 states. Thus, a move from one state to another will not affect Medicare coverage of the person who moves.

On the other hand, Medicaid has different rules in each of the 50 states, since Medicaid is a joint federal/state program. While certain of the Medicaid rules are the same in all states, there are many areas of the Medicaid program where the states differ.

As a result, it is possible--though not likely--that a person who qualifies for Medicaid in one state may be disqualified in a state they move to, because the rules in the two states differ. In your case, since the California Medi-Cal laws are more lenient than the other 49 states, I would expect that your dad's Medicaid/Medi-Cal coverage will continue unaffected. And yes, he will need to re-apply once he moves there.

My dad is already receiving both medicare and medicaid in Illinois. If I move him to California would he still be covered or would we have to reapply?
