Do you think this eclipse is going to make our dementia ones more wild?

Just make sure they don't look at the eclipse unless they have the special protective glasses.

Maybe that would be a good time for a nap so they're not aware of the sun being blocked out.

I've got to say that I never even noticed the last eclipse. It isn't as though there is a dramatic darkening of the sky, it's more like a normal overcast day and happens very gradually. Totality, if you happen to live where it occurs, only lasts minutes.
I have to add that the eclipse I remember was not total, but an annular eclipse in 1984. I expect the conditions would be similar for most viewers except for the very few under the path of totality who have clear skies.

Maybe those who experience sundowners maybe that is something to watch out for. I have heard all of the animal kingdom think it's night and go to sleep.

I was thinking the same thing this morning, wonder how those with sundowners will deal with this. Imagine dozing off just after lunch here on the east coast and waking up around 3 and finding it dark.... man, that was a long nap.

I know farmers are not happy about it, as the cows start heading to the barn long before it is time to milk them. Either the lead cow decides hey it time to head home or the farm dog heads out to get them.

FF, I'm wondering if there are any dairy cows still pasturing on the back forty and coming to the barn twice a day to be milked, maybe in the Amish community but certainly not anywhere near me. When I was young my friend's dad pastured their cows across the road from the home farm, I though it was cool when we would drive down the road and open gates on each side of the road and he would call "here bossie bossie" and the cows would lift their heads and then slowly wind their way home ;)

We can't really see it here in central NY but I hope that it doesn't affect my mom!!

Talking to a new young squirrel outside on the block wall. It came back from about two weeks ago. It stopped to listen, looks right at me, then plopped it's body out flat to rest while listening.
That was so cute! But I had to go.
It thinks that I am one of it's long lost squirrely relatives, I am sure!

Well...it got dark(ish). Inside the house it was dark. Outside was like having dark sunglasses on. My Mom stayed chill and cool as a cucumber. Now she said "When is all this hoopla gonna be over"? I guess I have my answer. No extra sundowners!😜

The shadows here were remarkable -- so psychedelic and unreal looking. My mom was Debbie Downer and kept saying things like it's not going to happen here, it's not going to get dark, it's no big deal. Not a person one would want at an eclipse party. Sigh. She must have said 100 times that you didn't need glasses if you didn't look at the sun. I got her to get up to see the shadows on the porch. It took her a few minutes to get across the room and I was glad the shadows were still weird when she looked. Her eyesight is so poor that I don't know if she could really tell anything, but I tried to share it with her. My mother doesn't have sundowning. She gets bad when she goes to her bedroom at night. That and the morning are her worst times. The eclipse did phase her. Sadly, she didn't get anything out of it.

After dropping off hubs at work, I drove by the lookout park. No crowds that late, but a telescope had been set up, a set of people were sitting on the lawn. A rare bird with a yellow underside was trying to find it's way into the locked trash shed, and landed on the metal lock, looking at me as I drove by. Not just a wild bird glance, but really watching me, as I slowed to watch the bird. It did not fly away like most birds do.

On another main street, a group of women, all dressed in black, were out walking ....
heading to somewhere, long robes flowing in the wind.....

You know the worst part of it was for me. I saw everyone on TV having fun with all their friends and it made me feel so lonely that it hurt. It's like a huge reminder how life is passing by without me.

When you don't post for awhile, I will start to look for your posts.
I don't want to intrude.
But, you have all of us here, as friends, and people who respect your opinions and advice. Whether or not it is spoken. I understand the hurting, and being lonely, and the obligations (so many) to make life work for another human being, sacrificing our own interests and lives.

My gosh, the way the media was talking during the month, I thought we were going to have darkness sometime this afternoon. Nothing at all. Here in the Wash DC area the sun remained shining big time, no change at all :(

I echo Send's kind message. Please know you are not alone. I too felt as you did caring for my dad. Everyone else was living and I was stuck. But now that my dad passed, I still feel stuck. Trying to make some headway but sometimes still tormented about the past. Sending you love and hugs.

About the eclipse and its affect on people but I will see what happens tonight.

Not being able to have a shared experience is one of the lonliest feelings I have on a regular basis.
The effects after the eclipse were a strange wind. Wonder if that is part of it.

Must get dinner now, because hubs is hungry and he is acting normal!!

On a funny note, one of the news channels here posted to their instagram account to message them with questions about the eclipse. One person asked "why did they pick Wyoming?" Can you imagine?

ROFL. We had a person write the local news station to ask them when it would be safe to look at the sun again. SMH.

Today, on PBS, NOVA is presenting scientific facts concerning our recent surreal, astronomical, astounding event of ECLIPSE 2017.
As far back as the Babylonians predicting an eclipse to today's ability to predict "The Path of Totality" more accurately when, it's path, the timing, etc. is available to scientists.
First contact is when a bite out of the sun is showing.
Second contact is when the Moon completly covers the Sun.  People cheer!  One minute and 55 seconds of total eclipse, revealing a beaded corona of the Sun, which are magnetic fields holding the plasma, once escaping into coronal loops.  Then, there are coronal mass ejections which can be storms affecting earth, even putting out earth's power grids.  To predict these storms and understand them, to study the total eclipse is necessary.
At Casper Mtn. Wyoming, the eclipse (total) lasted 2:55 seconds.
