I generally let my mom sleep at night if she can. If she has overflowed and is wet and uncomfortable then she won't sleep and needs to be changed before she can settle down. Of course if it is feces it needs changing as soon as possible.

I agree with cwillie - doing a change during the night may cause more disruption than is helpful. Change right before night, then check first thing in am. Maybe listen with a baby monitor, so you'll hear any night restlessness, and work to regain sleep patterns, and if you find any feces spread issues, keep a log - it may happen less than you think, if a woman is sleeping and not rustling around too much. A major issue for UTI risk, is wiping from back to front - so easy to do with women - important to clean in am with care, and also check during the day.

It would probably help to change the patient during the night, but depending on the case it may or may not be necessary so just play it by ear. Not every night may be the same, so just play each night by ear

Hi ,
My mum used to have UTI due to wearing diapers as she was bedridden . I started giving her daily cranberry extract pill 20,000 and never had another UTI for close to 6 years.. Try it .. really works . God Bless you all. I have been through the same journey for the last 10 years and still recovering from losing my beloved mum 2 weeks ago. She went home gloriously to be with Lord Jesus in Heaven , after 94 years on earth .. Keep up the good works ..Love you all.

Since his stroke over a month ago, my dad's incontinence has worsened. In order for both of us to sleep through the night, his care taker and I put him in his pull-up and double up on his Depend shield. To protect the sheets on his bed, I purchased the plastic mattress cover and bed pad from Walmart. Hope this helps.
