So, assisted living expenses are based on his income solely and has nothing to do about mine? He earns too much for medicaid, he is on medicare. And he does not want to live in a independent living apartment. I thought if we went there to live, we might have better access to the assisted living and when he needed it, maybe, maybe I could afford to stay there in the same place. I am only 61, but am willing to live there to meet his needs. He is in his early 80"s.

Please explain a little further. Are you looking at moving to an independent living apartment in a continuous care community, in the hopes that when your husband needs assisted living he will be able to stay within the community? Husband doesn't want to move into the independent living unit, but you think it might be best for his future? Is that the basic situation? I'm kind of confused, so please correct me.

If that community has a sliding scale of charging for assisted living I think that you need to get the details directly from them.

For Medicaid, the total income and assets of the couple are considered, and the expenses of the spouse still in the community are looked at. But I have no idea how a specific continuous care community does this.
