My mother is 68 y/o and is living on her own. She would talk about people using devices to beam in on her legs, she would unplug TV, phones, freezer, fridge, microwave and clock radio. She has knives in all windows, she boards up her doors. She talk off the wall sometimes and she complains about people and lie on people. She is stubborn and self medicates and barely take her important medication. She talks about people or out to steal and get her, even her family members. She wets herself a lot and thinks people are causing it. She sits all day and does not get dress. She fell and did not contact anyone for 12 hours so she is in a skilled nursing facility but will be going home soon with a wheelchair. She refuses help from me and others because she is suspicious of anything. I'm not sure what it is but it's driving me crazy. I can't get her evaluated without her signature so that's tough.

It may or may not be dementia.... your Mom could be just paranoid of the outside world. You mentioned that your Mom self-medicates... what is she taking? Those medicine could be having major side effects. How does she get her groceries and her medicines?

I know you are trying to get her help, what I would do if Mom is ready to be discharged from the hospital, tell the discharge social worker she can't live alone and there isn't anyone that can handle her. Just keep telling the social worker "no" you cannot take her home.

No, she's not going home alone. You are going to ask for a psychiatric consult and tell them what you've told us here. And that there is no one at home to care for her.

She takes herbs that she bought from radio advertisement. She substitute that for her pre diabetic, high blood pressure and more hosts of prescribe meds. And I believe my brother was getting her prescription as she was requesting them but she would just collect the bottles, there is some prescription from 2014. I have told the social worker about her, the social worker said that she was slow cognitively but would need to evaluate for dementia. And the evaluation would require my moms signature and she is not having it. The social worker believes it may be dementia but she is no help. I am afraid of her having those knives all over the house and especially if she thinks she hears things. And she does not see her doctor much, she refuse home healthcare and she pushes myself and everyone away.

Look up "Baker Act"; it's an involuntary psychiatric evaluation. Tell the social workers that you think that your mom needs to be sent from rehab to a psychiatric facility for evaluation. She is a danger to herself and to others. Use those words "danger to herself and others".
