Can we choose the bed rail? My 93 yrs old father needs a bed rail since he fell out of bed. Does medicare pay for a bed rail? Does his family doc need to write a prescription, or what do we need to do to get Medicare to pay for the bed rail? Can we choose the bed rail we want?

My father was able to get the hospital bed and the railings at the initial prescription from his doctor. If your father's doctor prescribed a hospital bed, he can also prescribe for the railings. You can try checking a Medicare-approved medical supplier in your area. They would be able to answer your question.

My dad's doctor Rx a supply for my dad. When I went in to pick up the supplies, the supplier explained to me that Medicare would not cover this despite the doctor's Rx because my dad needed to follow protocol. Basically, he cannot get the nutrient drink without having a stomach tube. They offered the alternative nutrient drink - Ensure. See, the supplier knew more what was covered by Medicare than my dad's physician.

VKM, if you do get a bed rail, please read about precautions to avoid injury. The last SNF we used refused to use bed rails b/c of the hazards. So, please be careful for your father.

We had a bedrail for my dad when he got out of rehab. He climbed right over the top, which was more risky than the fall! We ended up taking it off. Nursing homes won’t use them, anymore. They just lower the bed and put a big pad next to the bed.

vkm, I am moving your post closer to the front of the forum. Hopefully a caregiver who has been through this will be able to answer you.

I had gotten my Dad a small bedrail to help him get out of the bed. He just went ahead and paid for it out-of-pocket as he didn't want to bother with any paperwork.

I know hospital beds are covered if the doctor feels it is medically necessary. My Aunt who has COPD and other medical problems was offered one. Not sure the cost it will depend on the type of Health Insurance he has to go a long with medicare that will decide your cost. Hope this helps! Hugs to you and your father.

Yes, I would think you need a prescription from a doctor. Then you need to find a pharmacy or a durable medical equipment place to order it thru. They will tell u if medicare covers it. If not, check with the supplimental to see if they cover it.
