As far as I know Medicare does not cover the cost of the chair but his doc can write an order and you won't have to pay sales tax. That was my experience in WV.

But make sure your dad is capable of operating the chair safely and doesn't dump himself on the floor when he's unattended. It takes basic cognitive ability.

PINOT, you will need to check with Medicare as what I have read on-line it isn't very clear, but whomever you purchase the lift recliner from I believe that company needs to be a Medicare approved provider.

What I did for my Dad, last month I rented a lift-recliner because I wanted to be sure he could handle the remote control. The control was very simple, arrow up to lift the chair, arrow down to bring it back down to normal and to recline. He learn pretty quick. With a "rented" chair, one can purchase it later at a discount.

As Windy had mentioned above, one has to make sure that Dad is able to walk away from his chair after it is lifted. My Dad has to make sure his rolling walker is right in front of him and that the wheels are locked. Knock on wood, so far so good. No reports from Memory Care that he had fallen like he use to with his regular recliner :)

I have seen them sold used pretty reasonable, on sites like Craigslist and your local Facebook buy/sell sites, which could be a good alternative to buying a new one.

Have you contacted Medicare through their website, medicare.gov?
