Find Care & Housing
Hello and welcome,

Your name caught my eye. I am in New Orleans. Your screen name says, Nolasaints but your profile says Florida. Anyway. WHODAT! Geaux Saints! How about our LSU Tigers! My daughter is attending LSU. Undefeated and national champions! Geaux Tigers!

I would take advantage of the aide but if you are concerned that you will not be able to care for your husband or if you are getting burned out being a full time caregiver now, it’s understandable.

Some people even suggest placing someone before it gets worse so the person can adjust to new surroundings. Of course, all decisions are up to you. I am not trying to sway you one way or the other.

If you know that you will eventually place him start the Medicaid process. Self care is very expensive. So why not start on getting the ball rolling for Medicaid now.

Best wishes to you and your husband.

Thank you for taking time out of your day to send encouragement my way. Geaux Saints! I am a Florida Girl but have always been a Saints fan. My hubby and I used to go to NOLA about 4 times per year. Even if only staying for one night (had to get my beignets from Cafe du Monde) and love Yea Olde Coffee Pots red beans and rice. I went to NO long before I met my hubby and have some fantastic memories from there. Thanks for reminding me! I met and partied with Slash and Axl Rose' personal chiropractor Steve, and awesome guy. And met Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich while having breakfast with Steve. Those were some wild, crazy, and great times. My husband is also a R&R drummer but hasn't played in 3 years, he is no longer able to remember the intricacies of each song.
I have checked into Medicaid assistance and have found my husband eligible. I haven't applied yet but probably will next week. From what I gather anyone wanting to qualify should contact an Elder Care lawyer and have the lawyer fill out the paperwork after checking personal finances. It's much easier to qualify than I previously thought and each state is different but Florida seems to be one of the best for long term health care qualifications. Thanks again and take care.

I would talk to Medicaid. You will be considered a Community Spouse. This means ur income and assets will be split. Your husbands split spent down to meet the Medicaid cap. You will not be left impoverished. Theirs more to this and every state has their own criteria.

Thank you JoAnn29, I am finding what you say to be true and plan to go through an elder care attorney next week to get the paperwork filled out. Appreciate your response.

All nursing homes accept social security-it’s cash. You just won’t find one that someone with only social security can afford. Medicaid does pay for memory care. If your parent can afford to self pay for a few months you can probably get them placed in a better facility and transition to Medicaid when their money is gone.

Thank you so much. I have found out that S.S. will only cover 1/3 of the cheapest facility. And I also found out just a few minutes ago that there is a thing called Medicaid In-home Aid that will send medical person to assist for 8 hours per day, in Florida, but first you must qualify for Medicaid and its a 3 month look back at finances.
