Cat, you really need to contact her doctor about this.

I would call tonight and hopefully, he has an answering service that can get a message to him.

Hi there, Thank you for responding. The medication was ordered after a urinalysis and culture. The uti microorganism must be treated. However, Nitrofurantoin is on the Beers Criteria list of medications not recommended for the elderly. Is why I was seeking anecdotal answers. Thanks again for responding.

This lists reactions. When Mom was in for a UTI tgey used a broad spectrum antibiotic. It had penicillin in it and Mom was sensitive to penicillin so they switched her to another one. A culture should really be done to find the right antibiotic.

Thank you, Jo Ann. I can’t seem to open the link but I will look it up on Mayo Clinic website. Nitrofurantoin is on the Beers Criteria list for medications not recommended for the elderly. However, the germ must be treated so… we’ll see. Thanks again.

Mom was prescribed this for her uti by pcp, but palliative care np felt cipro would have been better. Since she started Nitro (or Macrobid) she finished the course. She's been itching for two days now possibly a side effect. We have another prescription now for the itching.

Hello, Thank you for your response. It’s hard to know which drugs produce which side effects ahead of time, right? It’s hit or miss. We’re all different. My mother refuses to take Cipro because of the potential of Achilles heel tearing. Thanks again!

Please speak with the physician immediately. A quite rare side effect of this medication is pneumonia. I got double pneumonia when taking it last March and was hospitalized for four days. After I was discharged, I found a new urologist.
