If His SS is currently directed deposited into a bank account that you’re already a signature on and unless there has been some sort of issue that created a red flag for SSA, there would be no reason for SSA to require representative payee to be done.

Has something happened that would be a red flag?

My understanding is Rep payee is required if there’s a minor getting SS benefit. Or if there has been a APS type of issues or guardianship done. Rep payee has a whole reporting system that is mandatory.
