My dad's okay in assisted living but his girlfriend wanders & must go in locked area. Do I separate them?

They both have Alzheimer's. my Dad is still okay, very social, dresses himself, eats well just has trouble with words but doesn't't understand that his girlfriend needs help. Do I put my Dad in locked facility with her with residents that are very much below him and Don't talk or understand or do I separate them? They have been together for 4 years. Dad is 89' girlfriend is 80

Separate them. Your father will decline faster being in that environment, I'd think. Will they be within driving distance so they can see each other?

So sad. I am sorry for all 3 of you. Going to a facility with more advanced patients may speed his decline, and may affect him emotionally. Losing his girl may depress him. I would consult his doctor. Maybe after she moves you can monitor him and adjust accordingly.

There are facilities that provide different forms of care to individuals. We have at least one local facility that provides regular assisted living for individuals who are still able to care for themselves, while at the same time offering an Alzheimer's unit for those who are in later stages of the disease. You might check your local facilities for something like this. That way the two of them could remain together in at least a limited manner!
