What is the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia?

My mother who is 86 asked this question, my 93 year old father suffers from what we think is dementia, he is in the later stages of this disease, but I could not tell her the difference. So I am asking for someone to explain what the difference is.

Dementia is a general term.. Alzheimer's is a specific diagnosis.

Dementia is a set of symptoms caused by damage to the brain. The type of damage determines the type of Dementia. Alzheimer's is the most common form of progressive dementia. Other kinds of dementia include vascular, frontal-temporal, Lewy Body, Parkinson's Disease with Dementia (PDD) and many others.
