Is there anyone out there with information on helping to put your LO in the car? I have an Honda Pilot and it's getting harder to put mom in. She has ALZ, plus arthritis in her back/neck, her feet are turning in and her legs are growing weaker. I can not sell my car. I've seen portable devices that hook onto the metal bars between the door and the car but those are $6,000. Any help would be appreciated.

JoAnn29, Those straps used to be common in cars my age. My Ford PU has a grab bar inside over the dor that Luz would use when she could still get into it.
There are all types of after market items that are made for things like this but today's vehicles may not be able to accept them.

Maybe steps that they make for older dogs to get in and out of cars or on and off furniture could help? Hand holds that OldSailor suggested are a great idea too. I also just saw this new device someone invited that makes a step you attach to the metal bar that the door latch holds onto so shorter people like me can step up to get things on and off the roof I wonder if that might attach to something lower on your vehicle to create a step between the ground and the running board.

We purchased a portable Hoyer Lift that folds up into the trunk. It works pretty well. It was around $1100. I think if you get a doctor’s order, Medicare may pick up part of it.

I had trouble with Luz getting into and out of our minivan. So I built a step/platform for her to step onto that raised her just over two inches and really helped her. For her it had to be low since she had trouble steping higher than about 3 inches. It was a full platform not just a little piece of wood. It is big enough for both of her feet to stand on and regain her balance.
You might be able to find a carpenter or handy man to build something similar. If you need a larger one it probably should be made to flod up so yucan put it into the vehicle.
Also check with the vehicles dealer to see if the hand holds can be installed to help her pull herself a little.
Best of luck to you.

Sailor, wish I could show you what my husband did so Mom could pull herself up into the car. Similar to a bus strap.
