My dad is a WW2 veteran and we applied for benefits for my mom in a facility. The check from the VA comes directly to my dad's acct. and he pays the facility himself. Applying for benefits takes a few months but it is retro active back to when you applied and will be reimbursed. We used an attny that strictly dealt with veterans. I just applied for and received home bound benefits for my husband. I could hire anyone of my choosing for the services, however the individuals had to pass a background check. Then the helpers are paid by check written directly to them by the agency handling the finances for our local Veteran's hospital. I was able to hire a granddaughter who is a Licensed Nursing Asst. and a woman to help with housework who was well known to me. Be careful in selecting the people you bring into your home. It took about two months from application time until I had workers in place.

My mother has this benefit. You can hire anyone you wish. I hired my handy man to sit with Mother as long as she did not need a lot of hands on care. Now I have a lady who lives in our home. She has no experience with this, but she is nice and helpful and can help with daily routines, bathing, meals etc. She can even pitch-hit in some medical situations, like doctor visits, visiting nurse who comes into our home etc. I hand picked her. We tried an agency and it was a nightmare. The woman stole from us and when we reported her, the agency kept our deposit and didn't send out a different caregiver. We were ripped off for over $700. Do your own interviews, check references and give them the "feel good in my gut" test.
