Someone was discussing how Dementia patients can hide their symptoms for short periods of time and people who don't spend much time with them think the caregiver is exaggerating, at best, or even lying. I thought someone said the term is "showboating" and it's exhausting. Does anyone know if that is the correct term? Or knows of any articles about the subject? I've been googling with no luck, so maybe I got the wording wrong.

I think the usual term is "showtiming" or "show timing."

I read that term also but I skip around this site so much I can't what response I was reading.
MIL did that kind of. She had a "script" of sorts to ask about or tell. Then she would repeat it.

Roni - when you google it put quotes around the word show timing and add "in dementia patients" ...you'll get a bunch of AC threads and articles. I started one a while back on that subject too - pg. 12 under discussions. My MIL does this whenever we take her to the doctor's or she sees any other professionals (therapists, etc.), and yeah, she's always worn out afterward. Good luck!

my moms just friggin nuts, it isnt an act.. today im " jim " and im trying to kill her again.
and boni, some people dont see the problem because it doesnt affect them and they arent interested enough to double check her statements, and in the case of family members are in denial for the purpose of wheaming out of helping..

anyone....hardass, you seem to have a bit of knowledge on these things....

What about this...with certain things mom will spit out instead of swallow...we have been battling for a while but I gave up, I just feed her if it one of those things/days... but before we would battle over it... so she has been told thousands of times not to spit her food out ...deep down i know she cant help it but it is frustrating to clean up all the mess etc.....
Here is the kicker...the baffling part.
if i am present she will not spit it out or if I step away in between bites to do something and catch her doing it soon as she see's me seeing her she "trys" to hide what she is doing
sooooo this thought came to me.....how can she know it is wrong but not know not to do it....?? sorry for the poor wording! .

I recommend video taping your loved one when they show signs of dementia and then passing it along to other family members. Another option is to ask them to come and spend a full day with your loved one as the dementia will show.

thanks and sorry didn't mean to distract from topic....
I basically know why she spits it out
just don't know how she has such selective control about doing it!
(makes me think she is messin with me at times, faking it for the attention..lol just my crazy imagination)!
I am learning most this lil things there is some logical explanations.
