My husband is not longer able to care for himself and is totally dependent upon me, but he can still dress and feed himself, does that count as 100% disability? I am asking to see if we qualify for additional tax deductions on our home. We got hit with a very large escrow shortage and a higher monthly mortgage payment. I have to find cost deductions somewhere. Thank you

DFleming, talk to your local assessor's office about what tax exemptions are available, such as veterans, old age, low income and disability. They will have forms for you to fill out and be signed by the MD. Also talk this over with the person who does your federal and state tax returns.

I should add that I know a married couple in my county. The wife has Parkinson's. They were able to qualify for total exemption even though their income was more than $12K based on her disability.

I live in Birmingham, AL, and was able to get total disability for my mother for property tax purposes. To qualify, she had to get letters from two separate doctors about her condition. I took her the letters and her tax returns into the property tax office.

It turned out she also qualified because her gross income was less than $12K a year. It is nice that we don't have to get letters from doctors each year. We just have to show she is poor by showing her tax returns. Areas differ in their requirements for exemption. You may want to call your county office to talk to them about specific requirements and what you need to apply for exemption.
