caregivingstuff, I think a lot depends on how many hours each day the live-in caregiver will be helping. A normal work week is 40 hours, thus would the patient need care the other 128 hours in a full week? Will another caregiver come in to give the weekday caregiver relief on the weekends? Will the live-in caregiver be able to go back to his/her home to recharge?

Also, what would be the duties of the caregiver? Is a higher level of care needed? if yes, then the pay should reflect the extra skill. Light housekeeping or major housekeeping? Cooking? Running errands and taking the patient to doctor appointments. Will you pay for mileage?

Pay is usually whatever is agreed upon between the person doing the paying and the what the caregiver will accept. Will you be doing the payroll or will the caregiver come from an Agency? One would need to pay payroll taxes.

If the caregiver isn't from an Agency, please note that patient would need to add a "workman's comp" rider to their homeowners insurance in case the caregiver gets hurt on the job. Back injuries seem to be the most common injuries, due to picking up the patient or transferring the patient from bed to a wheelchair, etc.
