Jim:

I am a retired Rehabilitation Counselor after 33 years of working with person's with disabilities. I recently obtained and read a copy of a book titled "The Brain's way of healing" [normandoidge/?page_id=1042]. It's available at Amazon or likely at your local library.

The author presents what I consider to be an entirely new, and insightful way of looking at the brain and how it recovers from injury and disease. More than anything it gives some ideas in specific cases how a different approach than the "traditional" ones can make a huge difference in recovery. You may find that your father's doctor is not up to date on this information, may be even resistant to considering other options. Medicine has a history of resistance to change, yet is always changing. Examples of this abound: Consider Ulcers which are now known to be caused by bacteria in most cases; Consider the current research into the gut microbiome and the way it is involved in healthy immunity and our general health, and how dysfunction can cause obesity, and other diseases.

Get it, read it, go to medical appointments with your father if you can and discuss treatment options with his doctor which encourage the brain's healing capacities.

Good luck!

That is most definitely a question for the neurologist. Take advantage of every single bit of physical, speech and occupational therapy prescribed and demand more. NOTHING is more important to his recovery.

Being able to speak is great hopefully he is able to communicate well. Has he seen a neurologist? If not, have his regular doc to make a referral. The neurologist will be more able to give you an indication of what rehab potential he has. I'm sorry this has happened, look at rehab potential and ways to prevent another stroke. He's still young. I hope he has enough rehab potential to still enjoy life.
