We were to the Dr last week, and called Friday about his worsening behavior. The last few days his walking is asful( it was not good but now no balance) and his mood is terrible, conbative. He is still talking nonstop when he is awake, and his works are right but in worse nonsence theme than usual. He was up for almost 36 hours, then sleeping alot today. He is eating. He is complete DNR, and after 3 days I can't see calling 911, but I will be calling the Dr Monday morning. To see what he thinks we should do. If it is a stroke, will he be able to go to rehab.. or will they just refuse to take him due to the ALZ?

Wow, sorry about that pamz... it doesn't sound like a stroke, not that I am all that knowledgeable on it anyway, however, it does sound like a UTI. Then again, my mom goes through the exact same behavior at least twice a week.

I've noticed with my mom when she goes through these bouts, her mood changes, her walking/shuffling is worse as well as the non stop talking... I contribute it to lack of sleep. When she sleeps at night, she's fine... once that "off" switch stays in "on" mode it is as you described above.

Hugs to you...

you could be right.. I work in neurology...(therapist) but it never dawned on me because the ALZ is getting so bad. I did ask about a UTI a few weeks ago.. I'll bring that up again (have a sterile sample cup... don't ask LOL) I mean, his behavior has been getting alot worse the past 2=3 months so I just attributed it to this.

It is really hard to know, since dementia itself can be responsible for so many strange symptoms.

For his comfort and yours it would be worthwhile trying to determine if something treatable is going on. Discussing it with his doctor on Monday sounds like a good plan.

Yup, it does sound like a possible UTI, and that should be treated, regardless of the DNR. You should keep him comfortable. Try an over-the-counter test and see what it says, and if its positive, notify the doctor. They may call-in a prescription over the weekend.

haha, I have a sterile cup and one of those toilet hats as well. Plus I buy the UTI test kit from the store so when she's really off I check it myself. It doesn't take much at this point to trigger the weirdness. Constipation = pacing - legs are sore = pacing.

Don't let him sleep too long today or he'll be at it again tonight!!

It's amazing how they can stay up for so long and talk to whomever the entire time.

If It's a UTI I will sure get it treated! I'd rather keep him home with us as long as I can, but hubs is losing his mind this week, and I can't have that either! If this is normal progression, then I want to get help.. if we can get him back to a few months ago things will be OK here.

Well, I was able to get a urine sample today (now takes 3 of us to get him to bathroom and 2 had to change thier clothes), so I will see if I can take that tomorrow. MC is coming to assess him tomorrow for a respite stay. He fell twice today and he is dead wieght.. thank god for hubs. Mom is crying and feels like a "failure" but she understands that we can't physically do this at this point
