Or is it dementia or delirium. Dad is 86 years old and is in assisted living with my Mom taking care of him. Also, he gets help with showering and sometimes with dressing. He also is very stubborn and refuses to take his medication, so my Mom grinds it up and puts it in his food. Mostly, I'm curious about the talking to himself all the time. Anyone else have this going on? Thanks!!

We all talk to ourselves, but most of us do it quietly in our brains. His social filter is no longer working. Hallucinations are a hallmark of Alzheimer's, you play along unless the vision is upsetting to him, at which point you hold his hands and reassure him. Touch is very important.

Think about it this way, haven't we all talked to ourselves at one time or another? Or a lot? I was so glad when hands free cellphones started being used in cars, now I could talk to myself without feeling like someone was watching me :P

What type of conversations is your Dad having? Is he talking to people from his past? Is he reliving good times?

I really believe that some elders are being over medicated, thus maybe this could be a side effect of a prescribed medicine he is taking, or it could just be how his memory is working now.

As for being stubborn and not wanting to take his medicine, I believe most men are that way since birth.... nothing new.... my Dad is that way, he just doesn't like to admit that his health needs help.
