Does your dad have any home health care after his hospital stay? Because you can talk to the nurse and find out what they can do for him. Sometimes they can have a social worker help you get some resources.
My mom was up every hour with her prognosis of progressive dementia. They prescribed lorazepam and trazedone for her at night. Course..that never stopped her. In her mind she had slept and she thought it was time to get up. There is a disconnect in the sensories of the brain. Does he have any type of dementia? I see that you say he has congestive heart. When there is a lack of blood floor there is a type of vascular dementia that can happen. I would have him checked out...there has to be something they can do. I hope you can find a solution..Praying for you. Keep in touch...this forum is very insightful and you can learn a lot from each and everyone of these caregivers. God Bless

Try some Melatonin which is harmless, but will help him. You can also try l tblsp. honey and 1 tblsp. apple ciger vinegar. Stir together, drink it down (yuck), but it works! Again, being on hospice, nothing is going to help for too long. Just keep loving him and show him you care.

Until he gets a hospital bed (although hospice should provide one?) You can purchase a "wedge" or something to position him higher in the bed. I also agree with the O2 comment. Have them check his O2 sats at night to see if that is a factor. I know my mom needs her o2 up at night, Head of Bed (HOB) up. She still has troubles, but does MUCH better with those factors. I know Hospice usually pushes morphine.... (not a fan)... but sometimes even a benadryl or pain med can help. Even tylenol at bedtime can do wonders. Tylenol PM? A good check up might be in order.

Is he waking to go to the bathroom? We just started FIL on meds for the prostrate , as he was getting up every two hours feeling like he needed to go. Every time he would wake me and I have horrible insomnia to start with. It was not good. Just started the meds last week and there has been a huge change -only getting up once now. Also could check if he has a bladder infection/UTI. Plus above suggestions are very good as well. No sleep makes everything so much harder for everyone!

He has pain and anxiety that need to be dealt with so try increasing the morphine.. And yes, he needs a hospital bed, late stages of heart failure can't get comfortable lying down flat.

What about increasing the dose of a sleeping medication? I just went through hospice with my dad (they were wonderful) and in our case they started my dad out at the smallest dose and went from there.

Could your dad be in pain that's keeping him awake? With CHF he could have problems breathing at night. Maybe try a little oxygen at night. Hospice can get this for you. Does your dad have a hospital bed? Another way to help him breath better is to raise the head of the bed about 30* if he has a hospital bed. Then there's always the tried and true: Benedryl. But make sure it's not contraindicated with his other meds.

Is this insomnia something new I wonder?
