Dad is ready to go to heaven, but he lingers. Not sure how much he comprehends but it has to be boring hanging around when he's already said goodbye to all of us.

We just can't seem to get our hearts, lungs, kidneys, and all other integrating systems to listen to us, can we? It IS frustrating.
There are many who are tired and ready to go; my dad was one of them. Yet the body is, from the moment we are born, absolutely determined to keep us going if it can.

Try just to make the best of this time in which no one has control over the whens and ifs. Talk with your Dad about your memories, about all you have learned from him, about his feelings now, and his truths.

Some of my very best memories of my dad remain those conversations we had toward the end when he REALLY could level with me about his feelings and experiences over his whole life.
I wish peace for your dad, and good memories for you.

You don't need to be there 24/7. A lot of the time they go when there is no one around. You go to the bathroom and when u come back they are gone. Is there anyone who has not said their goodbye. If so, get them there or if not not close by, call them and put the phone to Dads ear and have the person say goodbye.

One of the (many) excruciating things about spending time with my dad during his last days was knowing these were going to be my last moments with him and simultaneously having no clue what to say, no clue if he could hear me, and being bored out of my skull. I used a trick I learned when my mom was dying: I read out loud to him. I used whatever hardback I was currently reading, nothing special. I figured they might like to hear the sound of my voice and know I was there.
