I have posted here before about my dad having some behavior issues in his memory care facility. He was sent to psych ward and had meds adjusted and then returned to his facility. He seemed to be doing fairly well and I visit him very often. Things seemed stable for about a month. Well, a few days ago he pushed down another resident and she broke her arm. The facility called me to come and I could tell something seemed very off about my dad. Come to find out he had not been given two of his benzos for three days. He was going through withdrawals and was paranoid and thought the woman was trying to kill him because she was yelling at him. Now he is back in psych ward and his facility is discharging him. Will any other facility take him now that his record shows behavioral issues? I have called a few places and the fact that this is in his record is making it very difficult. Where do people go that have alzheimers with behaviors? His doctor said he is not a candidate for skilled nursing facility or nursing home due to his health being good otherwise.

Did they give you an explanation about why his benzos were not given? To me it seems that they were responsible at least for this incident at his facility; it is terribly dangerous to withdraw benzos in this manner.
I would make it clear to social workers now that wherever Dad is going, home is not one of the options. I am afraid it is now going to have to be in their hands where he can be placed.
I sure will be following this because I haven't a clue what happens when a patient has become this unmanageable by ALL facilities. Hope you will update this. C ertainlycould never be informed in any way to be able to handle this, and I can only hope that the social workers are. What an awful dilemma; I'm so sorry.

My dad was discharged from psych ward yesterday and moved into a new facility. The transition was awful. He was so scared. Today his new facility called and he is being aggressive once again with the staff. The Psychiatrist called also and said she will have to tweak his meds more. I am beyond worried about what will happen with him.

Sorry to hear of your dilemma. Strange that they kept back his benzos maybe you need to follow this up with the facility. Seems like a trigger to altered behavior.

I had a similar situation with my grandmother in her 90's and it was difficult to find a home willing to take her. They do exist and you will have to be honest with them regarding the details and make sure you feel comfortable with their response.

Doctors don't usually know, or want to get involved in recommendations so you will have to spend a bit of time "interviewing" the alternatives and hopefully you find one that you are happy to leave your dad with.

Good luck, gods strength, it's not an easy situation.

The ball was dropped on ordering his meds. They were not even at the facility. This was not my dad’s fault but now he has to pay for their negligence. I met with administration to get this issue resolved and I thought it was resolved and out of the blue the director called me and said he needed to go back to geriatric psych unit to get his meds adjusted when in fact he just needed the meds he had been prescribed. I was very thrown off by this and questioned it because it made no sense. She told me that he had been acting out all along...but no one ever told me. It’s just a mess. Ultimately I want my dad where he will be well cared for and I’m not going to press for him to be at that facility because I am not pleased. It is a very scary spot to be in because my options are very limited and this is uncharted territory. I will be spending the next days doing my research and visiting other places etc. The system is so broken for the elderly it makes me sick!

I am very sorry your Dad (and you) are going through this. Hopefully they can get the meds adjustment figured out very quickly and your Dad will be feeling better. Such a shame about what happened with meds at last facility. I hope this new place is better overall for him. I agree that the health care system for our elderly LO’s is very broken. With the aging population growing I’m afraid it will not be improving anytime soon. I wish you best of luck with your Dad.

His dr is wrong...SNF have these kinds of residents all the time & they handle them..if they have to send them to psych hospital to have medication adjustment, & then they come back to SNF. I know because when my mother was in SNF. a resident there hit CNAs & then he came back...& was better. This is part of the disease. ...Don’t let that dr push you around & talk down to you. Your Dad’s health is not good & is perfect candidate for SNF (skilled nursing facility)
good luck & hugs 🤗
