My Father is in need of care for an agressive and rare form of Alzheimer's Disease. He is only 69 years old. My Mother is a retired nurse of more than 40 years and she has been caring for him alone. It has been determined that she needs to seek additional help as he is very rapidly declining. Please advise if there is help available through Hospice. They are located at Smith Mountain Lake in the Penhook, Va area. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Respectfully, Troy

The local Hospital will know who the Hospices are. Try to get in touch with a case manager at the hospital. They are the ones who interface with the doctors and handle the discharges, going home, going to skilled nursing facilities, etc. They call the hospice people into the hospital to meet with the family or the doctors, and for a valuation before placement. They are the ones who will know which hospital probably works best with which patients. If that's not working for you, try the hospital social worker. I have other ideas that you have to start somewhere. I'll follow this thread in case you have more questions. How long as your dad had his Alzheimer's?.Did the doctors give it a particular name? This it's a very sad for the two of you and very hard on your mom to do the caretaking all by herself.

I actually found some local hospices by Googling Penhook Virginia home hospice but I guess they are removing all URLS again. There was one called careadvantageinc. I didn't mean to just offer a scrap of sympathy and nothing else!

Troy,

I'm sorry to hear about your dad's illness. You and your mom must be extremely upset.

You could call your dad's Dr., the one who diagnosed him, and ask him/her to recommend a hospice. To be eligible for hospice the Dr. has to have a reasonable opinion that your dad has 6 months or less to live. Medicare covers hospice but in the event there is no Medicare some hospices will donate their services.

Hope the information you find here is helpful.

Troy, you can look for a hospice in your area online. I just did and here are options: http://www.dexknows.com/local/health_care/health_care_services/hospice/geo/c-smith_mountain_lake-va/
