Has anybody had this dilemma? My Dad will not get hearing aides, cannot hear tv unless the volume is at 21! Gets upset with me - and my husband is home but stays in back room. They really don't get along & I'm in the middle!! Now Dad is saying he's hearing this one song playing & he wants me to turn it off. It plays 24-7 in his head. & I cannot deal with his constant asking me to turn it off . I do not know how to handle this. He has no hobbies, I've tried to occupy him with different things, had him put ear plugs in nothing works. Even put country music on for him. He doesn't want to leave the house! I really don't know what to do. I feel myself getting resentful & beginning to have hearing problems too. HELP ME SOMEONE PLEASE!!

Headphones. Get him headphones because a blaring television is miserable.

Also, he could have wax buildup.

Google "Musical Ear Syndrome" which is a phenomenon whereby someone hears a song playing over & over in their head. It is associated with hearing loss.

You may have to place your father in a Memory Care community if things get too difficult to manage at home. The vast majority of us cannot handle dementia on our own.........it takes an entire team of people working 24/7 to handle all the various issues that are associated with the disease. Since your husband doesn't get along with your father, and he's now having even MORE issues, you may want to look into placement for him before things get even worse, as often happens with dementia which is a disease of progression.

Best of luck!

I understand my step father has the TV blasting and he has a hearing implant too.

He is in AL, perhaps you might consider that for your father before your husband
decides to hit the road, this is not fair to him...or you.

If you have a TV with bluetooth, use a wireless speaker that you can put right next to his head. If you do not have a TV with bluetooth, buys wireless speaker and convert the TV by purchasing a transmitter that plugs into the audio output.

I am hard of hearing myself, I also wear hearing aids as well.
I do watch TV with the captioning on. Maybe he could do that. Maybe you could buy or borrow a personal DVD player and let him watch movies with the headphones on. If you have a portable computer (laptop), maybe he could watch internet TV (establishing a kid block on there would be helpful so he's not ordering stuff off the internet) on there with the headphones on. I thinking that a ipod, personal CD player or tape player would be good for music, too.

As for him hearing music in his head, when there is no music going on the room...I am going to try to not sound insensitive here, If I am, I am sorry....Maybe you should think about getting him examined...Sounds like something is going on in his head or it could be a hearing loss issue. For now, you may want to try a white noise machine to get his mind off that song. (Fan, radios that play soothing nature sounds, etc).

The blasting loud tv is a nightmare and so agitating. We got my mom hearing amplifiers that sit around the neck. The earplugs are attached so she can’t lose them. We got the Bose brand, but I know there are more affordable ones. She rarely wears them, but on occasion we get pushy and force them on her.

Have you thought about purchasing wireless headphones?

Get TV-Ears. They are a very light cordless headset that can control its own volume. You can listen regularly and Dad can crank up his own volume. My DH finally got them for the LR TV when he got tired of me yelling at him to turn the TV down. Now we have them for the bedroom too so I can sleep while he watches. Priceless.

Another vote for wireless headphones. I got them for my mother, and she used them every day. She called them "her ears." She could use them either with the sound turned on (for others in the room) or off. Worked perfectly for us.

Thank you all for excellent idea's. You are all so helpful. My dream was to retire so I could spend quality time with my parents. Mom is aggressively detorating. My Dad was married to someone who was so jealous & wouldn't let him go to any outings (family & friends) she has no , I mean, no friends. We had no idea he was so far into the disease. I realize this is not my Dad anymore but it's so very hard. I felt so much better posting my inability to help him at that time. We got him a new set of headphones yesturday. Hang in their everyone WE CAN DO THIS!!! Again Thank You All.

For dad, I wired up another speaker right next to his chair. This way it's loud enough for him but not loud for the rest of us. It does mess up the spatial positioning for surround sound though.

There is a product called TV ears. He has the ability to turn up the volume and the other person can watch TV at a better level.
