My Dad had a small side rail on his bed that he used to help himself get out of bed. He said it had worked great.

This side rail wasn't very expensive, but a real bear to install as "some assembly required" then on have to slide between the mattress and box spring to anchor it on the other side of the bed and back.

Found this product at a local Mom & Dad type pharmacy, the type of store that sells all types of health equipment and supplies.

Personally I find a grab bar over my head the best assist. As long as the patient has the strength to hang on to it.

It depends on what you are looking for. There are inexpensive grab bar type bed rails that are held in place by the mattress (google bed assist rails), all the way up to complex systems like Friendly Beds (featured on this site).
