She won't do it. She only remove, rinse the top ones. She claims the bottoms are hard to remove, but she won't let me do it. One time only at my house, while she was in the bathroom rinsing her mouth, i walked into the bathroom with an excuse, but just to watch her. She let me removed the bottom dentures when i was shocked on how dirty the top ones were, and told her they need it to be clean. To all this, she had nothing to say. I tried to remind her of her not so good of experience with the dentist. Meaning if she doesn't care for her dentures she will have to go back to the dentist, because she can get an infection, she can get sick to her stomach, because she is swallowing bacteria. All of these i say it nicely, but she takes it as if i'm arguing or fitting with her.

Give her the denture cup with cleaner in it and let her sit at table and watch them clean. Perhaps she is afraid she won't get them back when they are out of site. If this works, give her a soft brush to clean her gums while teeth are soaking.

Geewizzz!!!!
Good news and bad news; the good news is she still has a good memory, the bad news, she gets mad every time i remind her of her teeth...LOL. I'm going to use your approach of smelling last nights dinner on her teeth. Thanks!

WendyLou, there is no reasoning with our dementia affected elders. Been there, done that. You can use the forgetfulness against them ... you can suggest the cleaning when you arrive, in the middle of your visit and before you leave. Stated in different ways, always nicely of course, it can be like they are hearing it for the first time. Do it often enough and they release them, or at least mine did.

If you can get them out during the day, I had made arrangements with my dentist and I brought them to the office. They put them in the ultra sound and they came out sparkling.

There is no arguing so try to see what works for her. IOne time I told Mom that I could smell last nights dinner on her teeth! That got her to release them. Most dementia folks are living in their youth. Giving up their teeth is like asking a teenager to have their teeth pulled out. Good luck.
