My mother is 84 and her only income is social security. If I claim her as a dependent to file Head of Household (I meet all requirements) will the amount of social security income she receives be decreased or even worse, taken away altogether?
You mention your mother draws social security. Does she make less than $3800 a year? It is the most someone can make and still be claimed as a dependent relative. Most people receiving SS make too much to be claimed.
I'm confused now, too. I had never thought of it like that. You are right that SS for many people is not taxable. We need to get a tax expert in here to explain it.
I just found the answer. Yes, they can be considered a dependent if they receive SS, but have less than $3800 taxable income. The first answer I gave you was totally wrong. If your parent lived with you and you provided over half of their expenses, then yes, they can be considered a dependent.
Sorry for the wrong answer.
