Can I claim mileage and hotel costs to take care of a sick parent?

My father had cancer and I had to make several trips from Michigan to Tennessee to care for him, including staying at a hotel for a week while he was having surgery. Can I claim any deductions for that?

It is a sad thing, but no, I don't think so. If you were a professional you could take them off as a business expense. But I haven't seen an entry on tax forms where one could itemize these costs made for someone who is not a dependent. If someone knows of a tax break that is allowed, I am sure many in the group would be interested.
