The symptoms you describe your father as having are the same as what all the people in my mom’s memory care had, and I would suppose much the same as the residents in any Alzheimer’s/Dementia unit have. Dad doesn’t need to be in a special place for mentally ill people.

If Dad’s issues have progressed to the point where he is wandering off, you need to act as soon as possible. Even if he’s not wandering off regularly, it only takes once for something tragic to happen. This is a concern whether he lives alone or not. One friend’s LO climbed out the (ground floor) bathroom window once because he was convinced he was being held captive.

Research and visit possible placements for him as soon as you can. Enlist the help of any siblings or other close family members. Good luck and keep us updated.
