Find Care & Housing
You should be able to get into subsidized housing since you are over 60 and on disability. That would free up a lot of what you are spending on rent.

Contact a elder care lawyer (some money up front but could save lots later) or contact your state's Department of Aging (can find number online) and they help for free.

My daughter works at Social Security. I would advise you to go into a Soc Security office and ask them where to start. My daughter tries to assist those that need help and send them to the appropriate offices. She also tells me that there is a lot of assistance out there that no one knows about. I don't know where you live, but if you can't get answers please email me and I can get you some. Would love to be of assistance.

Go to the social Security office with all your receipts and bills. They should be able to put you on it immediately. But then I guess Social Security doesn't do anything immediately. Good luck!

Wamnane, you are correct. And they don't do anything quickly because of all the bureaucracy. However, there are some folks that work there, like my daughter, than will go above and beyond. I can only hope this gentleman can find someone like that. They are few and far between.

?? spend down is if they think you have assets beyond the exempt ones, e.g. one vehicle and your residence and a burial policy

Don't know what state you live in but they must have a Dept. of Aging, help for seniors, etc. Call them, they should come out and interview you and help you fill out all necessary papers. That is what they are there for so don't hesitate to call.

If you are in NJ there are a multitude of programs available for someone in your income bracket. PAAD (Prescription Assistance to the Aged and Disabled), a credit from PSE&G towards heating/cooling and, as was mentioned earlier, subsidized housing would help you enormously. Start with a search of Bnai' Brith homes....they are HUD subsidized and only about a max of 1/3 of the rent is collected from the renter....the balance is paid for by HUD. The SS office is always a good place to start....we have found these folks to want to be very helpful.....good luck....

Either someone had miscalculated your then come to expenditure ratio, in which case either Social Security or your county TAD (transitional assistance department) office could be of help OR if you have this limited amount of monthly income and are not exceeding the allowable assets, they are usually wanting you to spend down to make up for money you may have gifted, in their terms inappropriately. Did you give any money away that they think you shouldn't have? I agree with marrtell, you have to gather up all your paperwork and go in to SS to ask for assistance and guidance.
