Spend owns are a joke! What knucklehead came up with it? I also have a high spend down. I can t afford to go to the doctor or the dentist. I need to see an eye doctor, but can t afford it. Been wearing dollar store glasses, but they re getting where there not strong enough. Haven t seen the dentist in 7 yes. Teeth look terrible. After I get my check on the 3d, I really am literally broke on the 4th. No Joke!

In the same boat 59 on disability in NYS $850 is my part of the rent; after $500 spend down I don't even have enough to cover my rent let alone food or anything else.

Either someone had miscalculated your then come to expenditure ratio, in which case either Social Security or your county TAD (transitional assistance department) office could be of help OR if you have this limited amount of monthly income and are not exceeding the allowable assets, they are usually wanting you to spend down to make up for money you may have gifted, in their terms inappropriately. Did you give any money away that they think you shouldn't have? I agree with marrtell, you have to gather up all your paperwork and go in to SS to ask for assistance and guidance.

If you are in NJ there are a multitude of programs available for someone in your income bracket. PAAD (Prescription Assistance to the Aged and Disabled), a credit from PSE&G towards heating/cooling and, as was mentioned earlier, subsidized housing would help you enormously. Start with a search of Bnai' Brith homes....they are HUD subsidized and only about a max of 1/3 of the rent is collected from the renter....the balance is paid for by HUD. The SS office is always a good place to start....we have found these folks to want to be very helpful.....good luck....

Don't know what state you live in but they must have a Dept. of Aging, help for seniors, etc. Call them, they should come out and interview you and help you fill out all necessary papers. That is what they are there for so don't hesitate to call.

?? spend down is if they think you have assets beyond the exempt ones, e.g. one vehicle and your residence and a burial policy

Wamnane, you are correct. And they don't do anything quickly because of all the bureaucracy. However, there are some folks that work there, like my daughter, than will go above and beyond. I can only hope this gentleman can find someone like that. They are few and far between.

Go to the social Security office with all your receipts and bills. They should be able to put you on it immediately. But then I guess Social Security doesn't do anything immediately. Good luck!
