Has anybody else out there found out that they cannot access their social security acct. They say you have to have a cell phone and text ability. Hello. I am poor, I have just a basic cell flip phone with no texting. I sure hope they come up with an alternative method to access my acct online. Sure there must be millions of people just like me who cant' access their acct online. Anyone else have this problem?

When I first saw that Social Security was going to use a text to give us a "password" to use to get into the site, I thought don't they realize that many seniors don't even have a cellphone, or understand how this works. I didn't think this was going to work very well. Someone wasn't thinking.

Last night all I wanted to do was change Dad's apartment number, and couldn't do it like I did in the past. Oh well, I was too tired to jump through all the hoops so I will just let Dad's old apartment number remain as it is in the same building, and the mail is hand delivered anyway.

Here is an update on this topic. Social Security is backing off the requirement for a texting service in order to access their system

Brandywine is correct. But they have the number to call on the ssa.gov site if you don't have a cell phone with texting capabilities. According to the social Security site, you call "Toll-free: 1-800-772-1213. After you hear "Briefly tell me why you are calling,” please say “Help Desk” for help with a my Social Security account.

Note: Although our regular telephone service representatives are not available after 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, our Help Desk representatives can assist you until 12:00 midnight Eastern Time.

TTY (for deaf or hard of hearing) 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.:
1-800-325-0778

You can also use our automated telephone services to get recorded information and conduct some business 24 hours a day." You can find these instructions at: https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/help/

I'm not an American, but I smell a phishing scam. Who told you you needed a cell phone with texting capabilities? I think it is highly unlikely to be true, and in any event the social security site is ssa.gov, not social security, and it seems to be there for log in on line.

Brandywine1949: Call SS# and advise them that you don't have a phone with texting ability.

Social Security has a new policy. You can't access mysocialsecurity without a cell phone with texting abilities.

You're speaking of two different things. First, cell phones aren't that secure. I would never access a site like SS via a cell phone, regardless of how many people will say that you're safe.

I don't understand why you can't access your account online though. What URL (address) are you using? What error messages do you get?
