Dad passed away in 2010. Mom lives with us. Mom had a stroke and can no longer work. She is now on Soc Sec.

In the 90s, they did not pay self-employment and income taxes for a few years as a form of protest. They were audited and I think eventually started to pay back the taxes. But since the tax issue was in Dad's name, the IRS is not requiring Mom to pay anything. Plus, she has no income.

Can I toss out their tax papers from the 90s and 2000s? What about Mom's old paycheck stubs (she eventually got a job around 2003)?

Any other records I need to be sure to keep, please advise!

Why can't you just call the IRS and ask them? I had to ask them a bunch of stuff years ago, and they were very nice to me and helpful.
