My mom wants to live in a nursing home. The only way she could afford this is to apply for Medicaid. She has no assets and only my dads Social Security check. I am trying to figure out if she hates the nursing home if she will be allowed to cancel Medicaid and come back to live at our house and reclaim my dad's check? Without that check, it would be hard for us to take care of her financially.

Is Dad gone? If so its not his check its hers.

First, she would need to be evaluated for a NH for Medicaid to pay. There is criteria that needs to be met. SS checks are direct deposited. If you want to see how this will work out, I THINK you can pay her SS share by writing a check every month for her care out of her bank account. I chose to make the NH payee. This may cause a problem if she doesn't like it, having payee reversed.

If this is what Mom wants, then start looking around for a home where the people are clean. People seem relatively happy. No smells. Staff seem friendly.

That’s not true about the check being dads if he is still alive. A wife can collect social security retirement benefits based off their spouse, even if he is living. But I’m pretty sure her husband is deceased

Your mom would probably qualify for assisted living not a nursing home. Nursing homes are for those who cannot take care of themselves at all.

to answer your question, if she leaves the nursing home, she will get the social security check again.
