Can a CNA or Hospice aide give my mom her thyroid pill even if I’m home and tell her it’s ok or must a nurse do it?

It’s my chance to shower when the Aide comes so it is a real help and reassuring to know the aide can simply take over the specific tasks including giving my mom her thyroid so 45 min later can eat her breakfast. My mom is often sleeping when the aide gets here. And needs to first be massaged and gently moved with range of motion before she gets raised up in the bed to take the thyroid pill. It’s armour thyroid at the moment and I began to dissolve it with a 2 oz coconut water and she takes it pretty well.

Not sure. What is Armour? Prescription? Over the counter supplement? Hang tight and someone will know.

Yes it’s prescription but it’s basically dedicated bovine thyroid gland or something like that which works with T3 and T4.... do the dr switched her over from liothyronine. She’s standing now where before she couldn’t anymore

The way it works in my neck of the woods is that an aide can assist a client to manage their own medication but they can not dispense the meds - clear as mud, right? Basically if you have the pill in a clearly marked single dose container she should be able to hand it to your mother, but of course that may vary by region and agencies may also have their own rules. It never hurts to ask.

Legally, they are required to have additional training to administer medication. As Cali pointed out, the laws are different for each state. Hope it works out for you.

How do you know that? You don’t know where the OP lives. It’s actually legal in some states ;)

The answer actually depends on your state. In some states CNAs CAN distribute medication. In some states they can’t.
