I got stopped and charged for a dwi because of my meds, I am on disability and can not afford all the fines. Will it benefit me to give up driving which I should do anyway because I do take a lot of medications that can impair my driving ability

Get consultation with an attorney. If you can't afford one, ask for a court appointed attorney. It's not that simple. Know your rights. Get an attorney.

Don't expect a mere promise of "not driving while impaired" to do the trick -- Judges hear mouths moving all day long. If this is a "rest of your life" situation with the meds and you may have to consider giving up driving (seriously - dead is dead if you hit someone. Doesn't matter if it was caused by alcohol or prescription drugs).
Court will accept payments if you are low income. They also tend to smile favorably on people who address the problem BEFORE the court date - ie a letter from your Dr changing meds, first time offense, and/or letter from DMV showing that you voluntarily gave up your license will certainly all help.

A DWI ? Usually they have you blow in a BAC meter for a DWI. It would be better to surrender the license and present the Judge with a letter from your doctor certifying the need for the medications. Anytime you go to court for a DWI, you really need a good attorney.
