We admitted my aunt to an Assisted Living last August and within about 10 days she fell and broke her hip, spending the rest of the year in either the hospital or rehab.
When we placed her in the facility, the manager helping us told us that should she require an extended hospital stay, we would not be responsible for the "Care" portion of her monthly fees, just the payment for the room. This made perfect sense. We remember it vividly because it wasn't something we'd considered until she mentioned it.
After the first month, I was told that we were responsible for all the fees since she could return at any time. Obviously this isn't true since she broke her hip and they weren't going to pop her back into the assisted living without rehab. I told them I was not paying the entire amount, as we agreed. There is nothing in the paper work that states we must pay. The assisted living has been sold, and may or may not be in bankrupcy. The person who helped us is, of course, no longer employed there.
I have asked medical professionals, as well as more than a few assisted living professionals, and all tell me that it is NOT standard to have to pay for the care while the resident is not at the facility. I completely understand the need to pay for the room.
