A high rate of such adults with DS get Alzheimers and I assist my little brother. Precious little man of fifty, increasing confusions and sensory issues leading to resistance and aggression. I work full time and my 82 year old dad who has cancer assists me in our care for Jim. Just hoping to find a peer group to discuss things with and perhaps have advice from folks who have walked this ahead of me.
In Jim's case he did have a residential group home for ten years; however, it closed for lack of funds. We live in a rural area in WV. Programs are very limited. He does attend Workshop five days a week. Recent decline related confusion and anxiety caused acting out, but folks there are committed to keep him in program as long as possible. Blessedly the doc has added an anxiolytic to his medical regime, and we are guardedly hopeful this will help him get positively through his day for awhile longer. Still we get anxious ourselves at times having already walked with another family member through AZ.
