She is taking .5mg every 8 hours. She weighs 150 pounds and only takes a couple blood pressure medicines. She tried Paxil and one other anxiety med that made her skin crawl. She was taking the Lorazepam 2 times a day but the anxiety got worse. This has only been going on for the last 6 months. She's had tests to rule out other problems. The Lorazepam works but makes her so sleepy. She is 89 with moderate Alzheimers.

Thanks so much for your answers. After looking up more about Lewy Body Dementia I'm thinking it may be this, so thanks for that suggestion.

If the usual medications are making things worse instead of better, the MD should be checking for Lewy Body Dementia. It's really important to differentiate between Alzheimers vs Parkinsons vs Vascular vs Lewy Body types and this is best done by a good Neurology Clinic.

Low doses of klonopin (clonazepam) can be helpful. This drug can also help with sleep.

Anti-anxiety medications often make people sleepy during the day so it can take some work to get the right dose.

Anxiety is a common symptom with Alzheimer's disease and reassurance is very necessary, however some people need medication. Keep working with the doctor to get the best result possible, knowing that a perfect solution may not happen. Sometimes we have to do our best and live with that.

Take care,
Carol

Lorazepham is meant as short term fix.It can have terrible side affects including what I call psychotic behavior. There are other drugs but none are meant to be taken endlessly. When you stop these drugs you should weaned off them.
Why does she need this drug?
Anxiety over what is happening to your mind and body as you age is normal. We tend to forget that fact.
Sometimes simple reassurance is all that's needed.
