Can someone educate me on leg weakness, continual progressive leg weakness? My mom was initially told she had FTD, but getting a specific diagnosis has been difficult. Falls have continued and UTIs have affected her, but drs say nothing broken and nothing specific to hip surgery last Sept should be causing this. She’s had PT and that seemed to help but it seems to be really progressing now. She’s in AL.

My mother's legs are extremely weak. It takes two of us to ambulate her with her walker for exercise. More weaker when she has a UTI. Notice improvement with antibiotics on board. I use a w/c when I feel she is not safe. I find her walking ability is getting worse. I know eventually she be not be able to walk. but I take a day at a time, and do the very best to maintain what she now has. It breaks my heart to hear these stories because I know how difficult it is to see such decline. She needs to be safe so she does not fall and get inured and fracture her hip. I would have her evaluated, talk to her primary and get PT involved once again. They have been tremendous help to my mother and family. Lots of good ideas. We are thinking of getting a Hoyer Lift per advice form PT for my moms safety, and ourselves as well. UTI's can definitely affect her walking ability. We use PT when her legs get weaker, Medicare pays for services if needed. Please do not hesitate getting her evaluated so she does not fall. I have been dealing with this for a few years now and it gets more difficult as time passes. We do range of motion exercises at least every other day. This helps her muscles and also so she does not get so contracted. I would use a w/c until PT evaluates her. I would not hesitate to bring her to the ER if she shows signs of a UTI and walking ability is poor. It is the quickest way to get things done in my opinion. Alzheimer's site has good information and is very educational

My mom was falling a lot...as in several times a week & sometimes in a day! She kept telling us “my legs won’t move”. As it turned out she had really bad back problems causing issues with nerves in her legs. At the same time she was diagnosed with vascular dementia & probable Lewy Body Dementia, but it was the early stages & her back & leg problem were very real.
