The same home we have been had for 50 years...I work full time, am married with a 11 year old son. Is there any benefits we could be getting to help pay for ie. higher fuel bills extra groceries etc??? My father is one of the best in the world and I have always told him after my mom passed away that I will never put him into a nursing home, I have been told there is financial help for us...thanks for your time and I would appreciate some info on this matter.

Call your area's equivalent to the Council on Aging. They will send someone out to interview your dad, look at his assets and decide what benefits he may be entitled to.

If this is your dad's home, your post makes me very sad.

Usually assistance with utility bills and groceries is based on need and someone would have to prove that they are in need of this assistance by filling out numerous forms. But to get started call a local church and inquire as to what assistance is available. The church will have a list of organizations that may be able to help such as St. Vincent DePaul, Agape, Meals on Wheels, etc. Get a list together then start making calls to see what may be available to you.

(You don't have to be a member of a particular church to be eligible for assistance. Churches just have the best information.)

skiddles, usually when we promise our parent(s) that we would never put them into a nursing home our parents were active, mobile, sharp, taking care of themselves... we never think ahead or even view our parents needing full time help.... never thinking that we would need to quit work to help care for them.... and in the process damage our own health from the stress.

Here is an excellent article about "I promised my parents I'd never put them in a nursing home". https://www.agingcare.com/articles/I-promised-my-parents-I-d-never-put-them-in-a-nursing-home-133904.htm

I don't know what state you are in, but in IL. and AZ. I found no programs that help with expenses. Those that are in place are over ran with requests.

It is expensive and it gets worse, as the person needs more care. Does he have the assets to pay you? We always advise on this board - do not give up your job. Good luck to you.

If your dad is a vet check out the aid and attendance program. Personally, I have no experience with that but others here may help. My dad received hearing aids, walker, wheelchair and stairchairs. Our state has a homestead rebate on real estate taxes, maybe your state has something similar . Senior centers also have a lot of info. Good luck

1. Check your state agencies to determine if there's a senior or elder care agency.

In Michigan there's an Elder Law of Michigan program which not only provides limited free legal advice to income qualified seniors, but it's a gateway to other programs such as CAFE (Coordinated Access to Food for the Elderly).

The Services section gives you an idea what kind of information is available: http://www.elderlawofmi.org/#!micafe/c13zs.

This would be what you're looking for in your state, or something comparable.

2. Your local senior center might also have lists available of sources that might help.

3. United Way hotline, 211, sometimes also has similar information.
